My Love For Girls Aloud!

March 2, 2010

Hey guys, time for my 2nd blog. Been a while since my 1st one so thought it about time I got on to here and did my next one! Promise it wont be so long til my next one!

I wish to dedicate my 2nd blog to the wonder that is Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts, Cheryl Tweedy and Kimberley Walsh. Known colletcitvely as “Girls Aloud”, the best girl group ever! (DISCLAIMER: I am not saying they are the biggest, just that in my humble opinion they are the best.)

They started off in 2002 after winning the ITV reality show “Popstars: The Rivals” and have since gone on to score 21 UK Top 20 hits, the 1st 20 of which also got to the Top 10, a record for most consecutive Top 10 hits by any British group. They have also had 6 Top 10 albums and gone on 5 sell-out UK tours.

For me, their best album is either What Will The Neighbours Say or Tangled-Up but to be perfectly honest they are all pretty awesome albums. My favourite songs of theirs include Love Machine, Girl Overboard, Biology, I’ll Stand By You, Call The Shots, Miss You Bow Wow (which, contrary to how it sounds, is not about missing their dogs lol), Watch Me Go, Forever & A Night, Here We Go and I Say A Prayer. For those of you know dont know a lot of those songs they are album tracks which never got released as singles.

I love all five of them. Yes, like every other fan I have my favourite, mainly Nadine & Cheryl, but I am also interested in what the other three get up to also. They are currently on a break, Cheryl’s had an amzingly successful solo career, Nadine’s currently writing songs for her solo album, do wish she’d hurry up though, the other’s are not as much in the public eye but are also keeping themselves busy with side projects of their own.

Despite all of this do miss them as “Girls Aloud”. Wont be the same this summer with no tour. Been to all five of their tours, seeing them a total of 9 times, when you consider I have only been to 16 or 17 concerts in my life it show’s just how committed/obsessed (whatever other you choose to use) I am for these girls. Seen them 9 times, 5 times in Belfast (4 times at the Odyssey & once at the Waterfront), twice in Manchester, once in Liverpool and once at an outdoor gig in Nantwich, just outside Crewe.

They are unbelivably amazing live. My favourite tour would be the Tangled-Up tour of 2008. On each of their tours they do a special cover just for that tour. Done soem amazing covers like “Teenage Dirtbag”, “I Predict A Riot”, “Broken Strings” but my favourite cover would be Britney’s “Womaniser” which they did on the Out Of Control tour last year.

I have so many happy memories from their tours. Love seeing them in Belfast as Nadine gets the loudest cheers. Probably my happiest memory would actually have come from my 1st time seeing them at the Waterfront in Belfast. Toward the end of the inght Cheryl put her arm around Nadine and aksed the crowd “Are you all proud of her?”, of course the crowd go mental and Cheryl then said: “And so ya’s should be!” Awwwwww. Nadine didnt know where to look.

As I have mentioned I do love these girls, however, recently I did scare myself about when I figured out how much over the past 7 years I have spent supporting them. I am not just talking about the cost of their singles & album’s and also concert tickets, tour programmes and other merchandise but also overnight hotel stays in Manchester, Liverpool and Crewe as well flight and coach/boat journey’s over to England also. When I worked it out I got a rough cost of £1,000. I’d be pretty certain I have not spent anywhere near that amount on any other pop group/act EVER!

So, for me they are NUMBER ONE!! No other band or singer even comes close.

All that being said though, there is one little pet hate I have about them, well not really them as such but it’s the media’s obsession with calling them “Cheryl & co” or ” Cheryl & the girls”. It started when Cheryl’s individual fame went on to a different stratosphere when she became a judge on the X Factor in July 2008. Not blaming Cheryl, I’m sure there are times when even she get’s annoyed by it (at least I hope she does) but it is just annoying as they are all equal’s in the group. I do have a conspiracy theory though that the press have ulterior motives for always calling them those things. They know they are 5 young women and chances are, or they are hoping, that if they call them it enough at least one of the others will get jealous about the attention Cheryl gets and it could lead to arguments which could split the band up! I only hope that the other 4 are strong enough to not let it get to them to that extent.

I also hate how the press twist their words. Like recently Kimberley said she was finding it hard to get a date organised for when they go back into the studio because “there are diaries we have to work around, not just one”, of course the headlines read “Kimberley: ‘I am not happy with Nadine’” totally twisting her words to make it sound like she had been bitchy about Nadine!

No matter, we fans know the score. We have read so many ridiculous headlines & stories over the years so we are used to them now.

I am going to wrap this up now, think I’ve rambled on long enough lol. I cant wait to hear Nadine’s solo material, I also just cant wait for them to come back as a group. Already having GA withdrawl symptoms :( Only glad I have my cd’s and Out Of Control tour dvd!

So that’s me for another wee while! If you are still reading this then thank you for taking the time to read it. Hope I havent bored you ha ha.

Til next time
Robin (GA Forever!)
